Today, to my surprise Andy Jassy announced data centres in Mumbai to accelerate growth in India at AWSSummit India at Bombay exhibition centre.
Now An AWS region can have multiple data centres, or what the company calls availability zones. Amazon’s data centres in India are in Mumbai.
On pricing, the new region is in line with costs in Singapore, Sydney, and Seoul.
The new availability zone takes AWS to a total of 35 zones, situated at 13 worldwide locations, 6 of which are within the Asia-Pacific region.
Jassy, who was appointed CEO of infrastructure-as-service business in April, said 89 of the top 100 startups in India were hosted on AWS and that large companies like Tata Motors and Axis Bank (get a bank domain name) also used the cloud platform. In total, 75,000 out of AWS’ 1 million active customers are in India, he added.
