    CNAME Lookup

Find the canonical name (alias target) for any subdomain.

    What is a CNAME record?

A CNAME record (Canonical Name record) makes a subdomain an alias for another domain. For example, www.example.com is often a CNAME pointing to example.com. When a resolver follows the CNAME, it then looks up A/AAAA records on the target.

CNAMEs are especially useful for third-party services (SaaS platforms, CDN endpoints, email providers) where you want app.yoursite.com to point to customer123.saasapp.com without worrying about IP changes. For reliable DNS management with CNAME flattening at the apex, Netspace India offers India-based DNS hosting.

    Common uses

    • Verify that www. correctly aliases to the apex domain
    • Check CNAME targets for SaaS integrations (Vercel, Netlify, Shopify, etc.)
    • Confirm CDN endpoints (CloudFront, Cloudflare, Fastly)
    • Debug subdomain routing issues

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a CNAME record?
A CNAME (Canonical Name) record is a DNS entry that makes a subdomain an alias for another domain. When you look up the CNAMEd subdomain, DNS follows the pointer to the target domain's A/AAAA records.
Can I use a CNAME on the root/apex of my domain?
No — standard DNS does not allow CNAME at the zone apex. For apex aliasing you need CNAME flattening or ALIAS/ANAME records, which Netspace India's DNS hosting supports.
What's the difference between CNAME and A record?
A records point directly to an IP address. A records are faster (one lookup) but tie you to a specific IP. CNAMEs let you use a hostname so you don't need to update DNS when the underlying IP changes.
Why does my CNAME lookup return nothing?
Either the subdomain doesn't have a CNAME configured (it may have A/AAAA records directly), or the subdomain doesn't exist. Try the A record lookup instead.
Does Google rank CNAME subdomains the same as the apex?
Yes — CNAMEs are a routing mechanism and have no direct SEO impact. Google treats www.example.com and example.com as separate URLs but can see they resolve to the same content via the canonical tag.
    Can CNAME chains work?
Technically yes — a CNAME can point to another CNAME — but it's slow (multiple lookups) and some resolvers limit chain depth. Avoid chains deeper than 2.
